Description

In January of this year, a combination of unusual weather extremes and hydrologic conditions led to flooding and freezing of the Great Meadow in Acadia National Park. Now, join Brian Henkel, the Wild Acadia Project Coordinator, on Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Jesup Memorial Library, to learn about the circumstances that lead to ice covering nearly 100-acres of Acadia.

Henkel will provide an overview of the basic hydrologic and hydraulic principles used to understand the flooding events and the meteorologic conditions that contributed to a frozen meadow/forest.

Henkel is a Civil Engineer - Hydrologist working in groundwater and surface water hydrology for more than 15 years, as well as the Projector Coordinator at Wild Acadia. The Wild Acadia initiative is a partnership among Acadia National Park, Friends of Acadia, supported by Canon USA, and Maine Natural History Observatory that takes a watershed-based approach to improve degraded ecological conditions in and around Acadia National Park. The partnership works collaboratively with stakeholders such as university faculty and students, local towns, and other conservation non-profits to collect data, assess conditions, and coordinate efforts to improve ecological integrity, increase resilience, and maintain cultural authenticity.
