Join us at the Gilley Aug. 13 from 5:30 to 7pm for an opening reception for our next special art exhibit: Sarah Matthewson: Memory Flies Home, which runs from Aug. 9 through Nov. 1. Sarah Matthewson was born and raised on Mount Desert Island among deep red blueberry barrens, granite cliff beaches and pine draped mountains; she is the daughter of Carol Shutt and Rocky Mann. This textile exhibit includes bird portraits by the artist, using an embroidery method known as Silkshading or Thread Painting and also includes Maine landscapes made from found fabrics, using a quilting technique known as English Paper Piecing. She lives in England now with her husband and two children. Ms. Matthewson first learned embroidery from her grandmother, and quilting from her mother, developing a love of fabric and the memories it can carry. She continued to work with textiles, fascinated by how fabric, thread and fibers could be molded and manipulated to tell a story.
