Abbe Museum

About Us

With two locations, in Bar Harbor, Maine and Acadia National Park, the Abbe Museum is nearing its centennial year. Opened in 1928 as a small trailside museum in what is now Acadia National Park, the Dr Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities (as it was known then) was a repository for Native archaeological finds whose interpretation underscored the contemporary narrative of Wabanaki peoples as a "vanishing race." The Museum evolved over time and since opening its additional downtown Bar Harbor location in 2001, has grown into a cultural hub for Wabanaki voices, arts, and living cultures represented by ancestral, contemporary, and internationally celebrated Wabanaki artists and thought leaders.

The Abbe Museum today is a majority Wabanaki-governed, Indigenous-led institution that centers Wabanaki voices in the making of policy, the creation of exhibitions, and the execution of its programming.
