Abbe Museum & Reel Pizza Cinerama Offer Free Screening of Mary and Molly

Bar Harbor -

The Abbe Museum and Reel Pizza Cinerama, in partnership with Friends of Acadia, will offer a free matinee of the short film Mary and Molly at the Cinerama on Sunday, October 12 from 1-3pm, in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The free screening will be followed by a panel that features Co-Directors Donna Loring (Penobscot Nation) and David Camlin, as well as Casting and Dialog Director Margo Lukens.

Mary and Molly features the vision and work of Indigenous creators and collaborators and is based on the 2016 play of the same title written by noted Penobscot Nation Tribal Elder, activist and author, Donna Loring. Original artwork was created by Penobscot visual artists Shannon Sockalexis and Ann Pollard-Ranco, and Mali Obomsawin‘s (Odanak Abenaki) music scores the film.

Through animation, viewers follow along as Mary, a young African-American woman in Bangor, discovers her Penobscot Indian heritage. The film explores themes of race, heritage, and identity within the Black and Brown communities. Due to these topics and mature language, the film is suggested for ages 14 and up. Doors open at 12:30pm and the Reel Pizza kitchen will be open and ready to serve filmgoers.

Mary and Molly is part of the Abbe Museum’s programming for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The Abbe Museum is open on Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Monday, October 13, 2025) and will feature free programming, including performances by the Inter-Tribal drum group Rez Dogs and a printmaking workshop. Admission for that day (10am-5pm) will be “pay what you can” - which, along with the performances, is sponsored by Friends of Acadia.
